Carlos Rodriguez, accused of fatally stabbing a soldier in November 2008, was indicted on murder charges Tuesday by a Muscogee County grand jury.

Rodriguez, 22, stabbed 21-year-old Eric Salazar in the head on Nov. 10 when the soldier arrived at his girlfriend’s Armour Road apartment with his girlfriend and a friend to collect some items, police and Rodriguez’s indictment state.

When Salazar’s girlfriend walked into her apartment, she saw Rodriguez standing at the end of a hallway, Columbus Police Cpl. Wayne Fairbairn testified in Columbus Recorder’s Court. Rodriguez then stepped into a bedroom and returned with a baseball bat and a knife. The men started arguing, which turned into a fight, Fairbairn said. Rodriguez stuck the soldier with the bat and then stabbed him, the officer added.

The girlfriend testified that Rodriguez stabbed Salazar in the face, and that she tried to grab the bat from him.

Rodriguez was arrested about 30 minutes later on Meritas Drive. He was indicted on charges of murder, aggravated assault and possession of a knife during the commission of a crime.
