A LaGrange, Ga., police sergeant was arrested in downtown Columbus on Halloween and charged with DUI, police records show.
Landy Van Norris Mabry, 49, was arrested at 11th Street and Broadway at 7:40 p.m., a report said. Several people saw him drive onto the sidewalk at the intersection, and he tested positive for alcohol, police said.
Mabry was taken to the Muscogee County Jail, where he tested .188 blood alcohol level, reports state. Georgia law states that a person shall not drive with a level of .08.
Mabry made bond the same day.
“He, as required by policy, notified me by telephone that evening,” said LaGrange Police Chief Louis Dekmar. “That Monday, there was an internal investigation.”
Dekmar said that Mabry, a 28-year veteran with the LaGrange police, cooperated with the police department’s internal investigation, noting that the inquiry could have taken longer if he hadn’t.
As a result of the investigation, Mabry had his pay reduced by 5 percent, he can no longer take a police vehicle home and he must complete an employee program, Dekmar said.
“It’s not a temporary pay decrease,” the chief added.
In addition, if Mabry is convicted of the DUI and loses his driver’s license, he will be terminated, Dekmar said.
