A Lanett, Ala. man died early Thursday when the SUV he was driving crossed the center lane and collided with a dump truck in Valley, Ala., police said.

Rodney Lamar Snow, 43, was driving south on U.S. 29 in a 1994 Ford Explorer as a dump truck was headed north, said Valley Police Maj. Mike Reynolds. As they neared 64th Boulevard and 20th Avenue around 9:20 a.m. EDT, the SUV crossed into the northbound lane and collided with the dump truck, the major added.

Police Chief Tommy Weldon said Snow failed to negotiate the intersection, known as “Johnson’s Curve.”

“There was a head-on collision,” Reynolds said. “The dump truck was stopped in its tracks.”

Snow died in the wreck, though the driver of the dump truck, who works for a private company, was taken to George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital, Reynolds said.

“The SUV is a total loss — catastrophic damage,” he added.

The major said that the front part of the dump truck was also destroyed.
