With wholesome syrups, drugs, and holy prayers, it’s Monday Mail.

Crime time

Be sure to tune into CCG-TV Tuesday to see Columbus Council at its 5:30 p.m. meeting talk once more about creating an office of crime prevention, which would dole out money to community crime-prevention programs. Or not.

Either way, viewers may enjoy another exciting discussion of crime prevention and how to prevent it.

T-shirt free, you and me

In reader feedback we have this message regarding last week’s series of reports on drugs and crime:

Dear reporters,

I have enjoyed the articles about the drug problem in our county and the efforts to thwart drug dealers. I hope that in a future article you could mention the efforts of the school district and civic leaders to keep students from being addicted to drugs. There has been an anti-drug conference that has been ongoing for over 20 years — the Drug Free You and Me Conference. At the inception we had the conference for ALL seventh graders in Muscogee County, about eight years ago, unfortunately, we lowered the grade level to the sixth grade.

Over a three-day period all of the sixth-graders in Muscogee County are transported to the Trade Center where they are exposed to speakers who have experienced drug problems and a band that has a positive anti-drug message. This conference is in cooperation with the city, the school district and McDonald’s (Jack Pezold). Each student is given a DFYM T-shirt to wear on the day of the conference. I am sure you have seen the shirts around town.

I hope that you will mention the efforts of countless civic leaders and the school district to prevent drug use....

Sincerely.

Mona Griffin,

Chairperson, Drug Free You and Me

Dear Mona:

I would be glad to mention that in an article. Send me an e-mail about it.

It takes a Lotto love

Here’s a message about a July Monday Mail letter that said no one really wins the lottery if the prize is only $1 million:

Hey Chitwood,

Read the column with the letter from Dennis Roberts and your reply. I would be glad to win the million. As my old buddy Maurice used to say, “Maybe money can’t buy you happiness but it can damn shore rent you a heap of it.”

S. Wayne Poole,

Seale, Ala.

Dear S. Wayne:

Great! There’s an Aaron Rents right across the street from the newspaper, so I’ll go ask how long happiness can be rented.

If only for an hour, maybe I’ll go there for lunch.
