A Phenix City man was found dead in the swimming pool at his apartment complex on Tuesday night.

Kentrell Verdell Bowens, 26, was found at the bottom of the pool at Carriage Hills Apartments on Lakewood Drive around 8:40 p.m., police said.

Phenix City Police Capt. Frank Ivey said CPR was performed and Bowens was transported to Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital in Phenix City. He was pronounced dead at 9:46 p.m. His body was sent to the forensics lab in Montgomery for an autopsy.

Ivey said the exact nature of the death remains under investigation, but he said it appeared that Bowens "was actually in the pool swimming or attempting to swim."

The case is being investigated as a possible drowning.
