Man, 73, dies in accidental fire at gas station
A Columbus man was found dead Tuesday morning, accidentally burned to death outside of a local business.
Jimmy Lee Gates, 73, of 3116 Wise St., was pronounced dead by Coroner Bill Thrower at 10:57 a.m. Gates was at 2306 Buena Vista Road, a gas station at the corner of Buena Vista Road and Ewart Avenue.
"There was fire involved," Thrower said. "He'll be going up (to Atlanta) for an autopsy."
The Columbus Fire and Emergency Medical Services were called about the fire around 9:30 a.m., Lt. Ricky Wadkins said.
"It just looked like he was on fire," Wadkins said.
Columbus Police Lt. Charles Kennedy said it appeared Gates had something flammable on his clothes when he lighted a fire barrel.

The shooting happened around 7:30 p.m. at the school. An 11-year-old boy was struck in his lower right leg on the school's playground. He was taken to The Medical Center, police said.
