A Columbus man was arrested after he tried to chase several men who robbed him and his friends at gunpoint early Friday.

The 20-year-old ended up wrecking his Ford Focus during the car chase and was charged with driving under the influence and crossing a center line.

Around 2:20 a.m., officers were called to an apartment on 12th Street. Two female Columbus State University students told police they were with the 20-year-old man and another male friend at a Spectrum gas station on Wynnton Road around 2 a.m.

The two women, both 19, said as the four of them were leaving the gas station in a car, a hunter green minivan began following them. The van followed them all the way to their friend’s 12th Street apartment, and when they got out, four men from the van approached them, the women told police.

One put a gun to the head of one of their male friends and demanded money. At that time, one of the women was able to run inside the apartment complex and scream for help, according to police.

The robbers took $300 from one of the men and three cell phones, then jumped into the green van and fled.

The two male victims then decided to get into their own vehicle and chase after the robbers. The pursuit ended when the victims’ car wrecked on Camille Drive.

The male victim behind the wheel was arrested on the two traffic-related charges and booked into Muscogee County Jail at 3:54 a.m. Friday. He appeared in Recorder’s Court and received a sentence of 12 months probation. He was released the same day.

Police were unable to locate the other male victim.
