Carver's final game of the 2007 season was on television, and so will the Tigers' first appearance of the 2008 season.
Even before the Tigers open the season against crosstown rival Spencer, Carver will play Central-Phenix City in a scrimmage.
That scrimmage, which is scheduled for Aug. 21 at Garrett-Harrison Stadium, will be televised live by HSTV Southeast in conjunction with Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast. The game will start at 7 p.m. and will be seen on CSS, which is available on Charter Cable's Channel 37.
In addition to the live broadcast, a replay will be shown Aug. 22 at 5 p.m. Chris Blackshear, who does the radio broadcasts for Central, will do play-by-play for the game.
Bogie Wood, the HSTV Southeast president and CEO, said he is excited about the chance to televise the preseason game. HSTV has broadcast the Alabama Super Six and the Alabama state basketball tournament in previous years.
“You have got a premiere team in Georgia and premiere team in Alabama,” Wood said. “You will have some of the top recruits in that game. You can't go wrong.”
Carver coach Dell McGee knows it will provide a lot of exposure for his players.
“It would be a really good chance for some of our and some of the Central players to gain some publicity,” McGee said. “It would be great for the fan bases and colleges to see them play.”
Gary Gibson, the Muscogee County director of athletics, says it will be a great experience.
“It will be some great exposure,” Gibson said. “I am excited for the players, Dell McGee, Carver principal Chris Lindsey and athletic director Yvette Martin. They are a good football team, and they would enjoy this opportunity.”
Carver capped its 2007 season with a come-from-behind 16-13 win against Cairo in the Class AAA championship game that was televised on Georgia Public Broadcasting. The Tigers finished the season with a 15-0 record and won their first state championship.
While the Tigers had its best-season ever, Central finished the season with a 6-5 record. After missing the playoffs in 2006, the Red Devils lost 36-0 to McGill-Toolen in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs last year.
Both squads are expected to contend for their respective region titles this fall. Carver is led by linebacker Jarvis Jones, who was named the Ledger-Enquirer's Male Athlete of the Year last year. The Red Devils are led by running back Orwin Smith, who was a first-team All-Bi-City selection last fall.
Central will play its regular-season opener on Aug. 29 when it renews its rivalry against Shaw at Garrett Stadium. Carver takes on Spencer at A. J. McClung Memorial Stadium on the same date.
