A woman was seriously injured shortly before noon today when the dark gray Volkswagen she was driving ran off the road in Smiths Station and hit two trees.
Rescuers with the Friendship Fire Department rushed to the scene and extricated the driver from the crushed car, which was in a swampy creek bottom off Lee Road 246 just west of Lee Road 298.
Volunteer firefighters said the woman was in the back seat when they found her. She was rushed to a hospital in Columbus.
An Alabama state trooper on the scene said he was unable to disclose the driver's identity or give further details because he still was investigating. It appeared no other vehicles were involved.
The wrecked Volkswagen had smashed into two pine trees, each about a foot in diameter, after traveling over the concrete edge of a culvert.
