Back off

Published: December 26, 2008

This letter is for all tailgaters in Harris and Muscogee counties who comute back and forth from these two places, assuming that a few of you can read. I would like to tell you that if you follow too closely to the car in front of you, you may kill me or even yourself.

When you are trying to drive like Dale Earnhardt on I-185 and get as close as you can, does it make you feel macho? It should make you feel stupid.

If you are too close, then you have obscured my vision. All I can see is your lights in my side-view mirror as well as my rearview. This makes me have to slow down. When I slow down you have a tendency to get even closer, so I have to slow down even more, and so on it goes.

I have tried to move over for you and occassionally have pulled off the road to let you by, but sometimes I just do not have time. I suspect that you think that you have the reflexes of a cat and are fast enough to react to anything, but believe me when I say that you are not, and this flawed thinking may get someone killed one day and it might even be you.

So give the person in front of you a little room, and when you see an opportunity to pass, by all means do so. Just a little common courtesy or thoughtfullness will do nicely.

By the way, if you know of any other tailgaters, please tell them of this letter as I am quite sure that a lot of them are not able to decipher it.
