Former Columbus Sports Council Executive Director Janice Davis died Tuesday evening in Panama City, Fla., after battling a lengthy illness.

She was 53.

Davis, a Columbus native, was the leader of the sports council for nine years before retiring last year due to her illness.

The council is a not-for-profit organization that promotes tourism through sporting events.

It is a tremendous loss for the community, said current Sports Council Executive Director Herbert Greene.

“She did as much with as little as anybody I have ever seen in my life,” Greene said of Davis’ leadership of the Sports Council.

The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a..m. at Britt David Baptist Church. Visitation will be Friday from 5-7 p.m. at McMullen Funeral Home.

Davis is survived by her mother Omagene Holland and her sister Debra Davis Burch.
