CVCC drops doubleheader

Chatahoochee Valley dropped both games of a conference doubleheader against Wallace State-Dothan at home.

CVCC trailed 4-2 entering the ninth inning of Game 1 before scoring twice to force extra innings. In the 12th, intentional walks finally caught up to the Pirates as Wallace State scored five runs in the inning.

Reliever Derek Varnadore pitched six innings and was tagged with the loss. Starter Drew Freeman pitched six innings, allowing four runs, five hits and striking out four.

Josh Whitehead was 3-for-5 with an RBI and Bo Foster was 2-for5 for CVCC in Game 1.

The Pirates trailed 2-0 going into the bottom of the seventh inning of Game 2 when Kevin Putkonen doubled in a run. Wallace State then loaded the bases with an intentional walk with one out before CVCC clean-up hitter Heath Peterson bounced back to the pitcher for a game-ending double play.

CVCC (34-15, 16-8 Alabama Community College Conference) plays a non-conference game Tuesday at Darton College in Albany, Ga.
