Engineers, commanders and crew of the local Starfleet USS DaVinci — also known as “Star Trek” fan club members — mingled with patrons at Carmike 15 when the new “Star Trek” movie opened Thursday.
“It was awesome,” raved Shane Russell, a Fort Benning sergeant who specializes in computer technology. “It’s the best one yet.”
The soldier, who calls himself a Trekkie, has seen the original series, the subsequent spin-off shows and other “Star Trek” movies.
The new movie is a prequel to the original series, showing the familiar crew of the USS Enterprise as young officers.
Actors Tyler Perry and Winona Ryder make cameos. Of the original crew, only Leonard Nimoy, the original Spock, has an extended cameo.
The computer voice of the Enterprise was recorded, as usual, by Majel Barrett before her death late last year. She was the widow of “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry.
Chris Doohan, the son of the original Scotty (James Doohan), can be seen in the transporter room. And Carnegie-Mellon professor Randy Pausch appeared as a crew member of the USS Kelvin. Pausch, who died last July, was famous for the book “The Last Lecture.”
Sgt. Russell’s favorite character in this movie was Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy, played by Karl Urban.
Did he like it enough to return to the theater for another viewing?
On the big screen, “I’ll probably watch 10 times, easy,” Russell said.
Harold Stewart, a Columbus chiropractor, said at first he had a hard time getting into the movie, but once the crew boarded the Enterprise, he really liked it.
“The interactions in the movie made it interesting,” Stewart said. “I think you can go back to see the other movies after you see this to see how they grow up and interact with each other.”
Ann Crawford has never been a “Star Trek” fan, but she enjoyed the movie.
“It had more of the human side to it,” she said. “You can follow it well, and will thoroughly enjoy it.”
Her husband, Glenn, who works at Synovus, is the “Star Trek” fan in the family.
“I thought it was excellent,” he said.
“The young Spock (Zachary Quinto) did a fantastic job. It was so well done.”
Josh Nazario is a proud “Star Trek” fan and he’s also a fan of director JJ Abrams’ work.
“It was satisfying,” he said. “This really shows his range as a director.”
“It was a fabulous movie,” Lee McKeown said. “I loved it. I’ve been a fan since I was 3 years old. This movie definitely gives perspective to the other movies. I’ll probably see it half-a-dozen times, at least.”
This movie is one where you can sit back and relax, Todd Kes said.
“I loved the reboot,” Lisa Neal said. “It has great action, great acting, great directing.”
