Former Shaw star had been with Columbus Lions

The Atlanta Falcons signed wide receiver Troy Bergeron as a free agent Sunday after he competed in the team’s weekend mini-camp.

Bergeron signed with the Columbus Lions in March and has led the team in receiving yards, touchdowns and catches. The former Shaw standout signed with the Falcons on April 28 but was released a day later because of a hamstring injury. The team said it would offer him another chance if he could pass a physical after his hamstring healed, Bergeron said.

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound receiver played with the Arena Football League’s Georgia Force for three seasons and was named AFL Rookie of the Year in 2005. After the AFL announced it had canceled its 2009 season, Bergeron weighed Canadian Football League and NFL offers before choosing to sign with the Lions, his hometown team in the American Indoor Football League.

Bergeron signed with the Falcons in 2006 but was released after training camp. He then signed with the Buffalo Bills as a member of the practice squad later that season.
