Columbus police arrested a homeless man early Friday for burglary and second-degree arson in connection with two downtown Columbus businesses.

Around 6:15 a.m., police were called to Car Quest Auto Parts at 900 Veterans Parkway after a man reported a suspicious man striking the front of the business with a pole.

When they arrived, they found two of the business' front windows shattered. One officer also noticed a fire at the rear of E & S Mattress Discounters, about a block away from Car Quest. There was a box on fire against the side of the mattress store.

James Simmons, 51, was charged with burglary and second-degree arson.
