There will be a few changes to the school calendar for the next year in Muscogee County.
The biggest change is that school starts on a Thursday in August, instead of a Monday, and the school year will end on Wednesday instead of a Friday, said Valerie Fuller, Muscogee County School District director of communications. Students will also get a weeklong fall break and a five-day weekend in February.
The calendar was changed to accommodate additional planning days for teachers. Fuller said the district also had to schedule around meetings for different departments while making sure students had the required 180 days of classes.
Students will report to verify their class assignments on Tuesday, Aug. 4, and begin classes on Thursday, Aug. 6. They will have a week of vacation for Thanksgiving, Nov. 23-27.
Students also will have an extra break from classes during the second semester, Feb. 11-15.
Thursday, Feb. 11 will be a planning day for teachers, with no classes for students. Friday, Feb. 12 is winter break, and Monday, Feb. 15 is President’s Day. Together, the days add up for a five-day hiatus for students.
Spring break will be April 5-9. Classes will end for year on Wednesday, May 26. The schedule for next year’s graduation is still being determined.
The calendar is developed each year by a committee of parents and teachers. The new calendar was approved by the school board during its February meeting.
