One Columbus Police officer has resigned and another is facing possible termination after each was cited last month for driving under the influence in separate off-duty incidents, Chief Ricky Boren confirmed Wednesday.

Jeremy Hattaway was involved in a one-car wreck May 20 in Lee County when he was cited for DUI, Boren said. Hattaway, a corporal who has been an officer since January 2002, resigned Wednesday. Hattaway was on administrative leave and under investigation by the departmentís Office of Professional Standards at the time of his resignation.

Roderick Winston, also a corporal, was arrested May 31 by Columbus Police and charged with speeding and DUI, according to the police report. Winston, a 22-year veteran of the force, has been on administrative leave since his arrest, Boren said. His case is currently under investigation by Professional Standards.

A vice officer, Hattaway was driving a seized city-owned vehicle at the time of the wreck in Lee County, Boren said. Hattaway, who lives in Alabama, did not have permission to have the 2004 Toyota out of state, Boren said.

Hattaway's wreck happened at 12:15 a.m., according to the Alabama State Troopers post in Opelika.

"He went to court a couple of weeks ago and we put him on administrative leave," Boren said.

Hattaway, who was promoted to corporal almost two years ago, submitted his resignation last week and it was effective Wednesday. He was making $36,715 annually at the time he resigned.

Winston was driving on Gentian Boulevard when he was stopped by for speeding. After the arresting officer smelled alcohol, Winston was given a field sobriety test that was positive.

Winston was hired in July 1987 and makes $49,378 annually, according to city personnel records.

"I am always disappointed when an officer sworn to uphold laws goes out and breaks the law," Boren said. "But if an officer goes out and breaks the law, they will be treated like any other citizen in this community."
