Jon and Kate Gosselin's disagreement about where on their property to place crooked houses for their twin 8-year-old girls and 5-year-old sextuplets may have been a sign of martial trouble. Around the same time as the kids' playhouses where being constructed, the "Jon & Kate Plus 8" couple filed for divorce.

Well, maybe it wasn't just about the crooked houses. Maybe it had more to do with the tabloid exposure as the result of the TLC reality show. Or maybe it was the highly reported rumors that both Jon and Kate have had affairs — him with a 23-year-old teacher and her with her bodyguard. Both Jon and Kate have denied these rumors. Whatever the reason, the couple told fans that Jon & Kate would be together no more.

"It's very uncomfortable at this point... Jon has a lot of anger toward me... I would love to discuss it with him, and he won't talk to me. That's the truth," Kate said.

"I don't hate Kate, but you know...," Jon said.

No, Jon, viewers don't seem to know. What is best for you and your kids? Apparently, the couple has decided that divorce is the best option. Jon said the kids will live in the family house while he and Kate take turns caring for the eight children.

What went wrong?

"I was too passive. I just let her rule the roost and .... I finally stood up on my own two feet and I'm proud of myself," Jon said.

"It's the next chapter... A chapter I feel like would have played out whether the world was watching or not," Kate said.

"It's life. It's a roller coaster. It's what happens sometimes. You just get off the tracks," Jon said.

"I don't hate him. Never have. Never will," Kate said. "I'm tired of smiling on the outside and crying on the inside," she said.

"It's a shame. I will always love her as the mother of my kids," Jon said.

What impact will the couple's impending divorce have on the show?

"We've always done the show for the kids, to provide for them," Kate said.

"I'm still on the show. I guess we interview separately," Jon said.

What worries the couple the most about going forward?

"The label. That we failed. How that will affect our kids. How they'll be another statistic," Kate said. "I don't want to do this alone," she added.

"I wasn't always the greatest communicator, so I know that, but I do have feelings as well... I'm excited and hurt at the same time because I have a new chapter in my life. I'm only 32 years old," Jon said.

"It's going to give me a whole new empathy... It's not ideal. It's not anything you go into happily," Kate said.

Later in the show, Kate and Jon celebrate Mother's Day with the kids. It was raining as Jon and Kate took turns holding umbrellas over their kids' heads while guiding them into a restaurant for brunch.

"Things change... Not every day is the best," Jon said.

"I have done my best to keep our family together," Kate said.

"I just want my kids to be safe and healthy... show them that mommy and daddy love them," Jon said.

"It's just renewing that commitment to my kids and doing the best I can for them," Kate said.

Earlier episodes this season included:

Last week Jon and Kate Gosselin appeared on TLC's "American Chopper" where Jon said, "I like hanging out with the guys 'cause I don't have female friends as we all know."

Two weeks ago, Food Network chef Emeril Lagasse showed up for the show's 100th episode and cooked a meal with the family. Jon enjoyed seeing Emeril in Kate's territory. "He took control and he was kind of funny. He like pushed her out of the way and did his thing," Jon said. When Kate tried to correct Jon, Emeril said, "Leave him alone." Emeril received a slap from Kate's rubber spatula for that comment.

Two new episodes aired three weeks ago. Kate celebrated her birthday without Jon who was skiing in Utah. Jon said he wanted to go to Utah to ski with his friends. "It just happened to fall on Kate's birthday," he said.

"Jon is away which is kind of sad," Kate said. She and the kids traveled to Baltimore's Charm City Cakes. Duff, the star of the baking reality show "Ace of Cakes" on Food Network, helped each kid make a special cake for mom.

In the second episode, Kate traveled to San Diego with 8-year-old Mady. Jon stayed home with the other seven children.

"Sometimes you'll see Kate and I interview separately. Sometimes you'll see us together on the chair." Jon said.

Several weeks ago, season five of the show debuted amid rumors that the Gosselin marriage was in trouble. In previous seasons, the couple appeared together for interviews. In that one-hour show, they mostly appeared separately. Individually Kate and Jon each talked about how they were struggling with the recent attention from the tabloids and paparazzi. Kate said she was feeling a lot of anger and that she feared that she and Jon didn't want the same things anymore.
