June 25, 2009

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — Columbus golfers couldn’t compete with leader Scott Wolfes’ record week at the Georgia Junior Championship at Sea Island Golf Club.

Wolfes, of St. Simons Island, registered a 54-hole record 201 with a final-round 67 on Wednesday to secure the title. Ollie Schniederjans, of Poweder Springs, finished second at four shots behind Wolfes.

Columbus’ Cates Culpepper fared the best of the three area golfers who made Tuesday’s cut. He shot a 3-over 75 on Wednesday to finish at 8-over 224 and in a tie for 34th.

LaGrange’s Charlie Martin shot a 76 to finish with a 229 and in a tie for 50th, and Columbus’ Robert Swift was tied for 55th after shooting a 76 for a 230 total.

The top eight finishers at the tournament will represent Georgia in the Georgia-South Carolina Junior Challenge Match on July 17-18 at Sunset, S.C.
