Several local students won awards in this year's Young Georgia Authors writing competition, sponsored by the Georgia Department of Education.
The competition recognizes student writers across the state. Each school system may submit one student writing entry -- either a short story, poem, essay, journal or personal narrative -- per grade level. Regional winners and state winners are chosen for each grade level.
The following local students won at the regional level:
For the Chattahoochee-Flint region (includes Muscogee County): Natalie Patten, a first-grader at Double Churches Elementary, for her work, "Natalie and the Problem"; Graham Hoskins, an eighth-grader at Double Churches Middle, for his work, "Eden in Love"; Olivia Cohen, a ninth-grader at Columbus High, for her work, "I Love New York"; and Elizabeth Fane Foster, a 12th-grader at Columbus High, for her work, "Depression."
For the West Georgia region (includes Harris County): Phillip Walker, a kindergartner at New Mountain Hill Elementary, for his work, "Mo"; Abbigail Parker, a first-grader at New Mountain Hill Elementary, for her work, "Yikes"; Bailey Hurst, a second-grader at New Mountain Hill Elementary, for her work "Magical Shoes"; Jamie Lyn Yarbrough, a third-grader at New Mountain Hill Elementary, for her work, "Extinct Island"; Ryan Smith, a fourth-grader at New Mountain Hill Elementary, for his work, "My Weird Martian Dream"; Katlin R. Britton, a sixth-grader at Carver Middle, for her work, "The Jump"; and Kelley Sheffield, an 11th-grader at Harris County High, for her work, "The Oil."
The following local students also won at the state level:
--Abbigail Parker, from New Mountain Hill Elementary in Harris County, tied for the first-grade prize with Greer Gallentine from Winnona Park Elementary in Decatur City. Parker won for her work, "Yikes."
--Ryan Smith, from New Mountain Hill Elementary in Harris County, won the fourth-grade prize for his work, "My Weird Martian Dream."
