Georgia sate Senate candidate Josh McKoon picked up a key endorsement this week in his bid to replace outgoing Sen. Seth Harp.
Howard "Bo" Callaway said he was supporting McKoon in a release from the campaign.
"I have been involved in public service all my life and I know that Josh has the leadership skills and grasp of the issues to serve this community well," Callaway said. "I am proud to endorse him and I will continue to support his effort by serving on his steering committee. He is a true conservative that believes in the sanctity of life, lower taxes, and returning government to its true core missions in serving the citizens of the Lower Chattahoochee Valley.”
McKoon, a local attorney who practices in Alabama and Georgia, is a past chairman of the Muscogee County Republican Party. He is seeking to represent a district that includes all or parts of four counties -- Muscogee, Harris, Meriwether and Troup.
The race is still more than a year off. The primaries will be next July and the general election will be in November 2010. McKoon is running in the Republican primary.
There is no announced opposition, but Columbus attorney Ron Mullins said earlier this week he is exploring the possibility to running in the Republican primary. McKoon has jumped out to a quick start, raising more than $41,000, according to reports on file with the state Ethics Commission. He has also picked up endorsements from local leaders such as Synovus Chairman Richard Anthony, Harris County Sheriff Mike Jolley, Columbus businessman Sam Rawls, Aflac executive George Jeter and Harp.
Harp, who has served the district since 2002, is stepping down to run statewide for insurance commissioner.
