The Fourth Annual Army National Guard Best Warrior Competition begins today on Fort Benning.

Soldiers from seven regions across the nation will compete to determine the Non-commissioned Officer of the Year and the Soldier of the Year for the Army National Guard, according to a Benning press release. The tournament, which takes place at the Army National Guard Warrior Training Center, will run until Aug. 3.

The training center is located at 6901 Rosell Road, Building 4155.

Competitors will participate in events that will demonstrate their basic military knowledge, competence and stamina such as weapons familiarity, various first aid tasks, map reading, and other specific skills needed on the battlefield. They must also take written and oral examinations and will be judged not only on their knowledge but their appearance and military bearing as well.

Competitors will face physical challenges to include a 12-mile road march, obstacle course, combat water survival and Army combatives.

The winners will represent the Army National Guard at the All-Army Competition where they will compete for the Army Non-commissioned Officer of the Year and the Soldier of the Year.

Last year the Army Non-commissioned Officer of the Year was an Army National Guard Soldier Staff Sgt. Michael T. Noyce Merino and the Soldier of the Year was won by an Army Reserve Soldier, Specialist David R. Obray.

This was the first time since the competition started in 2002 that Army reservists took both titles.
