Come for the music, stay for the wharrgarbl

Tired after working five days in a row and going back to a home without A/C each night? No problem. I have three air-conditioned activities for you this weekend.

Friday night, check out the Indie Wars talent show, also known throughout all time and space as “Battle of the Bands,” at the Synergy Project, a building known for its terrible name, at 1819 Midtown Drive. Music starts at 7 p.m. Bring $7 and a Babel fish.

OK, I lied, because Saturday morning you’ll be without cool air as you look for sweet finds at the Uptown Yard Sale, 8 a.m. to noon between the 1000 and 1100 block of Broadway. If you happen to find “The Buccaneers of Shadakai,” pick it up and give it to me. It’s worthless. Really.

Saturday night, get your beer glasses and goggles ready to watch the UFC fight at H2O, 6499 Veterans Parkway, at 10 p.m. Bring $5 for the beer pitchers, $5 for the pizza buffet and $5 just to get in. Why? Because they’re having a female boxing challenge.

You’re welcome.

Burning love

Don't want to party with Alan and the all-ages crowd Friday? Assert your 21-and-older independence and opt for the First Friday Block Party, when one $10 cover gets you into the majority of Broadway bars. Start the night at Flip Flops' new outdoor patio, which gives you a prime spot to silently critique incoming partiers' fashion choices.

Go ahead and oversleep the next morning. Saturday's action doesn't start until 7 p.m. That's when Hinder performs at Fort Benning's Wetherby Field, with opening act Danielia Cotton. Tickets are $25 at the gate. The show is a must-see, even if your love affair with "Lips of an Angel" has reached its expiration date. The guys from Hinder thrive on a party attitude and warn audiences to expect the unexpected.

Or, go for something equally unpredictable: Alabama nightlife. We both know it's been way too long since you've partied in Smiths, Ala. Change that Saturday night, when local Elvis impersonator Rodney Hamrick performs at Del Ranch Bar & Grill, 4920 Lee Road 430. Show starts at 9 p.m. and tickets are $10.
