About 35 to 40 pit bulldogs were seized this morning in Box Springs, Ga., about 20 miles east of Columbus, law enforcement there said.

Talbot County Sheriff Herman Howard said he received a tip that the pit bulls — some showing evidence of dog fighting, such as scarring on their faces — were being kept on land just off Sizemore Road in Box Springs.

Terry Monds, no age given, was arrested at the site and will be charged with dog fighting and cruelty to animals, Howard said.

The Talbot County Sheriff’s Department was assisted in the raid by the Atlanta Humane Society and Norred and Assoc., a private investigation firm that specializes in dog-fighting investigations. Employees of the Humane Society were on the site tending to the animals and loading them into a van to take them to an undisclosed location in Columbus.

The investigation into possible dog fighting in the county will continue, Howard said.
