NAACP leaders say Muscogee County school district shouldn't allow students to opt out of watching Obama's speech to kids

State and local NAACP leaders said they were disappointed with the Muscogee County School District’s decision to allow children to opt out of watching President Barack Obama’s speech to students today at noon.

“I am saddened by the decision of the Muscogee County School Board to allow students to opt our of the President’s speech today,” said Rev. Marcus Hunter, the Columbus branch president of the NAACP. Hunter and State NAACP president Edward DuBose gathered with about ten other supporters outside the school district offices Tuesday morning to issue a statement about the speech.

“I encourage everyone to rethink pulling your kids out of school,” DuBose said. He said he would also send a statement to state superintendent Kathy Cox.

“To Dr. Andrews, we say ‘How dare you, when you are asking us for a SPLOST?’” DuBose said.
