Take time today to appreciate your period and your colon.

Why?

Because it's National Punctuation Day! It's a day to make sure you know your elipsis from your parentheses, and your hyphens from your dashes.

This marks the sixth observance of the holiday newspaperman Jeff Rubin started in 2004. His holiday encouraging people to pay extra attention to their dashes, periods, colons and commas has gained him press coverage worldwide, and in 2008 earned a mention on the morning TV show Regis and Kelly.

According to the Web site www.nationalpunctuationday.com, this day "is celebrated in schools and businesses throughout the world with activities, games, programs, and contests."
