Columbus State University Schwob School of Music voice professor Michelle DeBruyn's annual recital, "Michelle DeBruyn and Friends: The Power of Poetry and Prose," is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Oct. 8 in Legacy Hall, RiverCenter for the Performing Arts, 900 Broadway. There will be a 30-minute pre-recital lecture in the Studio Theatre inside the RiverCenter at 6:45 p.m.
It will be sung in English and feature all 20th century compositions about the great texts of the last century.
DeBruyn's "friends" are her colleagues in the Schwob School and include Amy Griffiths, Lisa Oberlander, Yien Wang and Andrew Zohn. Scott Wilkerson and Patrick Jackson, CSU English professors, will be giving a short lecture on two of the texts before the recital.
The program includes Argento's "Letters from Composers for Guitar and Voice," Barber's "Knoxville: Summer of 1915" and "I Never Saw Another Butterfly," composed Lori Laitman, with poetry written by children while in Terezin, a Jewish Ghetto during World War II.
"We are also performing a monster of a piece: Ned Rorem's 'Ariel: Five Poems of Sylvia Plath for Voice, Clarinet and Piano,'" DeBruyn said. "The text of the Plath poems will be decoded by Patrick Jackson in the pre-recital lecture." It's free.
