Anyone needing to renew their driver license in person or obtain a new one this week will not be able to do so Thursday.

That’s because the Georgia Department of Driver Services offices across the state, including the location at 8397 Macon Road in the Midland area of Columbus, will be closed Thursday for the first of four separate furlough days over the next few months.

The three remaining furlough days, mandated by the state amid a budget crunch, will be Nov. 19, Dec. 18 and Jan. 28.

The Columbus office will reopen this Friday. The office’s normal hours are 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 8 a.m.-noon Saturday.

The Department of Driver Services reminds residents they may handle some transactions, such as changing an address and requesting a lost license, online at www.dds.ga.gov.

Driver licenses also may be renewed by mail.

For more information, contact the Columbus office at 706-569-3033.
