Derrick Lamar Johnson faces charges of murder, possessing a firearm while committing a crime and possessing cocaine with intent to distribute — charges stemming from the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Eric Demetries Maxwell.

Columbus police say they found Maxwell shot in the back about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in a 1995 Ford Taurus in the 2400 block of Second Avenue. Johnson surrendered to authorities shortly after midnight, and was charged with murder when detectives determined he was in the back seat of the Taurus with a gun when the shooting occurred, investigators said.

Johnson’s Columbus Recorder’s Court hearing is set for 8 a.m. today.
