Update: Charges filed against suspect in LaGrange gas station homicide, robbery

Authorities in LaGrange say a teenager accused of fatally shooting a 55-year-old store clerk at the Shell Mart on Vernon Street faces charges of murder, aggravated assault, armed robbery and possessing a firearm while committing a crime.

The 18-year-old police identified as Christopher Caruso of Ridley Avenue in LaGrange is being held without bond in the Troup County jail, police said. He's accused of shooting Joseph Boison of Wynnwood Drive in the chest while robbing the gas station about 12:30 a.m. today.

Police responding at 12:38 a.m. found Boison on the floor inside the store. Officers said he was unresponsive as medics tried to treat his wound. Rushed to the West Georgia Medical Center, he was pronounced dead there at 1:27 a.m. His body has been sent to a crime lab in Atlanta for an autopsy.

Investigators saw immediately that the store had been robbed, as the cash register and lottery tickets were missing. From witnesses at the crime scene they got not only a description of a suspect, but also of his vehicle and its tag number.

The car was found on Alford Street, just blocks away. Caruso was found hiding behind a home on Ridge Street, also just blocks from the Shell Mart, police said. Investigators said they found evidence of the crime both in the vehicle and on the suspect.

The Shell Mart where Boison was shot is just two blocks east of the LaGrange College campus, close to the LaGrange Memorial Library on Alford Street.
