Muscogee County School Board named Board of distinction

The Muscogee County School Board has been named a 2009 Georgia School Board of Distinction.

The board will be honored at the Georgia School Boards Associaton/Georgia School Superintendents Association today in Atlanta and board chairman Philip Schley will accept the honor on behalf of the board and the superintendent.

To be named a Board of Distinction, a board of education must complete a series of tasks, which include undergoing a self-assessment and having a committee from the community apply the GSBA Standards on Governance to the Board's action.

The board must also develop an action plan to meet any areas that are identified as weaknesses. Boards must also re-certify and meet the criteria every two years through a self-nominating process.

The following criteria must be met in order to be designated a Board of Distinction by the Georgia School Boards Association:

-- The board of education and the system must not be on probation from SACS/CASI or any other accreditation organization. -- The board must have met criteria of Standards for Local Board of Education. -- The board must implement GSBA Board/Leadership Team Self-Assessment Checklist. -- The board must formalize the superintendent's evaluation incorporating district goals. -- The board must submit a copy of, or a web link to, the board’s goal-setting model and listing of district’s goals; a web link to the local district’s policy manual that is posted on the Internet.; a web link to posting of monthly board meeting agendas online and a plan for technology integration at the school board governance level of the local district.

They must also sign the form to being the board of distinction process and complete the form to verify compliance with board of distinction criteria. Signature on “Form to Begin Board of Distinction Process.”
