A Fort Benning soldier was seriously injured late Friday after he fell from the side of a downtown Columbus building.
Taylor Ward, 22, was in unsatisfactory condition at The Medical Center Saturday.
Witnesses said Ward climbed the side of a building at 1014 Broadway around 11:55 p.m. Ward somehow fell, taking with him an American flag hung on a mast about 12 feet above the street. He landed on the sidewalk in front of Brother’s General Store.
Bianca Shipp, 24, was walking on Broadway with her sister and friend when they witnessed the fall, which she described as “really scary.” She said she saw Ward bleeding from his head, ears and nose.
A police report said Ward sustained a head injury. An ambulance took the soldier to the hospital.
This is the second serious late-night incident in the past four months involving a soldier in downtown Columbus.
In September, Army Capt. William Keating, 27, lost both legs after trying to board a moving train at Ninth Street and Broadway.
Witnesses told police the Fort Benning soldier from Euless, Texas, had tried to climb a ladder on a boxcar as it passed by.
