The Auburn football team will get an invitation today to play in the New Year’s Day Outback Bowl, according to bowl President Jim McVay.
The only thing that could mess that up is the highly unlikely event that Florida falls out of the Bowl Championship Series and does not end up in the Jan. 1 Sugar Bowl.
“We’re going to extend an invitation to Auburn if the BCS takes both Florida and Alabama,” McVay said Saturday at halftime of the SEC championship game.
The Ledger-Enquirer and other media reported earlier this week that the Tampa Bowl would break with tradition and pick the 7-5 Tigers out of the SEC Western Division. Traditionally. the bowl has taken an Eastern Division team.
Who Auburn plays will likely not be decided until today. It will likely be 8-4 Northwestern or 8-3 Wisconsin, both out of the Big 10.
“Don’t assume anything,” McVay said.
The Outback Bowl had the choice of six SEC teams locked at 7-5. There was some question about taking a team that lost to Georgia and Kentucky, but McVay pointed out the Tigers beat Tennessee and Mississippi.
“We haven’t had a Western Division team in 13 years,” McVay said. “Why would we not take Auburn?”
