The United States Army Criminal Investigation Command is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the apprehension and conviction of the person or persons responsible for leaving a suspicious package with a threatening note last month on Fort Benning.
The package was found Nov. 19 by military police in a gazebo adjacent to Building 9111 on Kelley Hill. A post public affairs spokeswoman said officers were alerted to the situation by a 911 caller.
Two weeks prior to this incident, Army psychiatrist Nidal Malik Hasan was accused in the Nov. 5 shooting spree at Fort Hood that left 13 people dead and approximately 31 wounded.
The Army Times reported the package contained 20 hollow-point bullets and an anonymous note threatening an attack similar to the one at Fort Hood. A news release e-mailed Tuesday from the CID confirmed a “small amount of ammunition” was contained within the box.
Discovery of the package came on the same day Gen. David Petraeus, commander of the U.S. Central Command, was in Columbus for Fort Benning’s Officer Candidate School graduation of 152 new second lieutenants at the Columbus Convention & Trade Center.
