A 20-year-old man accused of fatally shooting a Hurtsboro, Ala. neighbor in Russell County Wednesday night was arrested in Columbus less than 24 hours later and charged with murder, sheriff’s officials said.
Demario Quantez Chambliss, 20, was found on Old Cusseta Road around 1:30 p.m. He’s accused of shooting Eric T. Fluellen, 33, during a dispute at 22 Dykes Road, Hurtsboro, Ala. around 9:30 p.m., said Russell County Sheriff’s Lt. Heath Taylor.
“As it turns out, there were two people shot,” Taylor said. “A juvenile was shot.”
The girl was treated and released while Fluellen died on route to the East Alabama Medical Center, Taylor said. He was pronounced dead at 10:24 EST at the East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, Ala., said Russell County Coroner Arthur Sumbry Jr.
“He was shot in the back at least once,” the coroner added.
Four people were in the side yard of the Hurtsboro home when the shooting happened, Taylor said. Chambliss and Fluellen lived in the same general area.
Chambliss is charged with murder and second-degree assault, Taylor said. He was in the process of being extradited to Russell County from Columbus Thursday afternoon.
Fluellen’s body was sent to Montgomery for an autopsy, officials said.
“The autopsy did reveal that the manner of death was obviously a gunshot wound — a homicide,” Taylor said.
