A Muscogee County jury awarded a Harris County widow more than $3.4 million last week in a wrongful death suit against the motorist who police say hit her husband while he was riding his bicycle on state highway.
Scott Matty was killed Feb. 3, 2008 when he was run over from behind while riding his bike on Ga. 315. Rachel Nicole Griffin, 17 at the time, was driving the Ford Explorer that hit Matty, police reported. Jeffrey Davis, another cyclist riding with Matty, was seriously injured in the crash.
Sherry Matty and the estate of her late husband, who was the father of three daughters, sued Griffin and her parents Frank and Karen Griffin.
The jury returned a $3,416,122 verdict last Thursday for the wrongful death and pain and suffering.
The Matty family was represented by the Columbus law firm of Daughtery, Crawford, Fuller & Brown. The primary attorneys were Jason Crawford and Dustin Brown.
“I would say this verdict goes a long way toward bringing closure to the Matty family,” Crawford said. “It also goes a long way toward showing how this community values a life, especially someone like Scott Matty.”
Griffin’s attorney Barry Noeltner of Atlanta did not return a phone message left at his office Monday morning.
Rachel Griffin is still facing criminal charges in connection with Matty’s death. She was indicted almost a year ago by a Harris County grand jury on four misdemeanor counts — second-degree vehicular homicide, failure to maintain lane, improper passing of a vehicle and following too closely
