Author and journalist Gay Talese, and Nan Talese, a publisher and editor with Knoff Doubleday, will speak at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Columbus Public Library, 3000 Macon Road. Books for purchase, and autographs, will be available.
Admission is free. The event is sponsored by the Chattahoochee Valley Libraries and the Muscogee County Library Foundation.
Gay Talese was born in Ocean City, N.J., in 1932. His parents were Italian immigrants. He attended the University of Alabama, and after graduation was hired as a copyboy at the New York Times. After a brief stint in the Army, Talese returned to the New York Times in 1956 and worked there as a reporter until 1965. Since then he has written for numerous publications, including Esquire, The New Yorker, Newsweek and Harper's Magazine.
He is the author of 11 books. His earlier bestsellers deal with the history and influence of the New York Times ("The Kingdom and the Power" was recently reissued in trade paperback by Random House); the inside story of a Mafia family ("Honor Thy Father"); the changing moral values of America between World War II and the era before AIDS ("Thy Neighbor's Wife"); a historical memoir about his family's immigration to America from Italy in the years preceding World War II ("Unto the Sons," also recently reissued by Random House), among other works.
Nan A. Talese is a senior vice president of Doubleday and the publisher and editorial director of Nan A. Talese/Doubleday, a trade book publishing imprint.
She began her publishing career at Random House, then joined Simon & Schuster as an editor, beginning her long editorial relationships with such authors as Margaret Atwood and Ian McEwan, Barry Unsworth and Thomas Keneally. All have beenwinners of the prestigious Booker Prize.
It was at Houghton Mifflin, which she joined in 1981 as executive editor, that she began her association with Pat Conroy as editor of his novel, "The Prince of Tides." She joined Doubleday as senior vice president in 1988, and two years later introduced her author-oriented imprint dedicated to the publication of a select list of quality fiction and nonfiction.
In 2009, she published Margaret Atwood's "The Year of the Flood," Peter Ackroyd's "The Casebook of Victor Frankenstein," Pat Conroy's "South of Broad" and Anne C. Heller's "yn Rand and the World She Made." Upcoming projects include Adam Haslett's "Union Atlantic" and Ian McEwan's "Solar."
