To help with earthquake rebuilding in Haiti, the St. Anne Pacelli School National Junior Honor Society will have a school-wide fundraiser on Thursday.

In addition, Bishop J. Kevin Boland of the Catholic Diocese of Savannah has requested contributions between now and the beginning of Lent go to Catholic Relief Services, the overseas relief and development arm of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Boland serves on the CRS board.

On Thursday, students and faculty can wear their favorite sports shirt or hat if they make a minimum $1 donation to CRS. The Diocese of Savannah will match the collection with $30,000. Contributions may also be sent directly to CRS.

About 80 percent of Haitians are Catholic.

“In many respects that is beside the point because these people, no matter what faith they profess, are in dire need of our assistance,” Boland wrote in a recent letter of appeal.

Boland visited Indonesia for CRS after the 2004 tsunami. The organization helped rebuild homes there.

Catholic Relief Services has a permanent presence in Haiti. All 300 CRS relief workers have been accounted for.

“As a diocesan family, we will muster all the support we can to demonstrate our solidarity with a people who are in urgent need of our spiritual and physical support,” said Boland, who was pastor of St. Anne Church until 1995.

To contribute to CRS, call 1-877-HELP-CRS. Online donations are also accepted, or checks can be mailed to Catholic Relief Services, P.O. Box 17090, Baltimore, MD 21203-7090. Write “Haiti earthquake” on the memo line.
