A Russell County corrections officer accused of shooting her husband in the abdomen early Monday has been charged with first-degree assault.
Candy McGuire, 34, allegedly shot her 42-year-old husband during a domestic dispute at their Lee Road 574 home, said Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones. Deputies were called to a home at 7:17 a.m. CST and found the man alone in the house.
The man was taken to The Medical Center in Columbus. Jones said he was responsive when he left Lee County for Columbus.
McGuire turned herself in at the sheriff’s office around noon CST, Jones said. She was charged that afternoon.
Jones said a .32-caliber handgun was recovered.
Russell County Sheriff Tommy Boswell said McGuire has been a corrections officer with his department for seven months and was a satisfactory employee.
