LAGRANGE, Ga. — During a morning committee meeting LaGrange City Council was reminded of the up the upcoming Georgia Cities Week. This year officials will ask for the help of local students in recognizing the week, which is organized by the Georgia Municipal League and aims to help citizens learn more about their community.

While Georgia Cities Week isn't until April 18-24, Councilwoman Norma Tucker said she's looking for sixth grade students right now to enter the "If I Were Mayor, I Would..." essay contest, which is part of the week's events.

Tucker said she will be talking with students this week about entering, the deadline is just about a month away on March 5. She asked fellow council members to spread the word.

"We're going to try to encourage any sixth grader in our community to enter," she said, later adding, "If y'all know some sixth graders tell them to write up an essay."

A winning essay will be selected from the municipal leagues 12 districts. Winners will receive a $250 savings bond and be recognized at an awards luncheon.
