A crime prevention director is the only missing piece for Mayor Jim Wetherington’s Office of Crime Prevention after the last three members of the seven-member Crime Prevention Board were approved.
Council approved the last three members during its Tuesday meeting at the Government Center. The thee are former Muscogee County School Board member Nancy Rinn, Kim Peters and Marjorie Newman. They will join Mike Gaymon, chairman of the board and president of Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce, Columbus Police Maj. Julius Graham, a representative for law enforcement; Peggy Connell, Muscogee County School District’s chief academic officer and educational representative; and Sharon Cox-Bevley, a Fort Benning liaison representative. The board will help the director coordinate programs with other government agencies to prevent crimes. “This is a good day,” the mayor said after the vote. “I’m glad to get it behind me.”
Interviews will resume this week for six candidates for crime prevention director who already had preliminary interviews. If a director is selected, Wetherington must take the candidate to the 10-member council for approval.
