Future development of a personal care home off Veterans Parkway in Columbus and a new sanctuary off Chattsworth Road in Midland, Ga., won approval by Columbus Council Tuesday.

The Rev. Farnsworth Coleman, pastor of New Birth Outreach Church, said he hopes to build a 100-room, assisted-living facility or nursing home within the next three to five years on 26 acres owned by the church at 10107 Veterans Parkway.

A need for the home was recognized after Coleman searched for a place for his disabled, 87-year-old father Emanuel Coleman of Alabama.

“I have been trying to get my father relocated here for a year,” Coleman said outside the council chambers at the Government Center. “There are no rooms.”

Coleman said his father has been on the waiting list for more than a year for facilities in Auburn, Ala., Phenix City and LaGrange, Ga.

“God told me to build 100 rooms,” Coleman said. “We have not set a date.”

The second development seeking a special exception approval was from Dorothy Smith of S.T.A.R. Ministries who plans a sanctuary to seat more than 250 people at 10701 Chattsworth Road.
