Georgia Tech hires Joe Speed to coach inside linebackers

Published: February 13, 2010

— In what has been a busier-than-normal offseason, Georgia Tech on Saturday reached the end of its monthlong coaching carousel.

In a statement released by school officials, the Yellow Jackets announced the hiring of Navy assistant Joe Speed to take over the coaching duties of the program’s inside linebackers. Newly hired defensive coordinator Al Groh will lead the outside linebackers in a 3-4 base defensive scheme that will look drastically different than last year’s linemen and defensive back heavy system.

As the ninth member of Georgia Tech’s coaching staff, Speed’s hire is the Yellow Jackets’ last addition

Speed has spent the last eight seasons at Navy, including six while current Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson was a coach there. Johnson left Annapolis, Md. for the Flats in December 2007.
