Alexander Pershounin, Alex to his friends, has been in Columbus for a little more than six months. Pershounin is the first double bass professor in the Columbus State University Schwob School of Music and is also director of jazz studies.
He has played double bass in several concerts with his colleagues, but tonight’s concert is his first in the Faculty Concert Series.
Pershounin will present a varied program of music for double bass in both classical and jazz, along with several of his own original compositions.
All of the pieces are virtuostic in nature with plenty of difficulty to challenge Pershounin as well as his Schwob faculty colleagues.
Pershounin is excited about what he calls his official introduction to the community. It is also the first time to introduce him as the director of jazz studies.
Already he’s making a change. There are four small jazz combos; two last year. Any Schwob student who wants to play in the small jazz ensemble is allowed to do so. He said playing jazz can only help a classical music student.
Pershounin is also proud of the four students in the Bass Ensemble. He said there may be fewer than five such ensembles in the United States.
He’s also encouraging all of his students to compose music. To perhaps inspire his students, several of his original compositions will be part of the program.
