Cooking grease clogged an 8-inch sewer line at Fort Benning and sent 5,200 gallons of sewage into Upatoi Creek, Columbus Water Works officials said Tuesday.
The minor spill was discovered at 10:10 a.m. and crews had it under control in less than two hours. Grease was cleared and the line returned to normal flow.
The Water Works has a contract with Fort Benning to supply it with water and sewer services, said Jim Patterson, vice president of communications.
“In this area we will keep an eye on it,” he said. “We will do visual inspection and possibly run a TV down the line.”
Grease found in the line is typical for residential area, Patterson said.
And problems with grease are not just at Fort Benning.
”We have areas in our system as well,” Patterson said.
The Water Works plans to start an education campaign to remind residents not to dump kitchen grease down the sewer. In addition to causing problems in the sewer line, Patterson said grease creates problems for the household plumbing.
