Baseball news
Major leaguers have reported for spring training. Opening day for the 2010 season is just over a month away. I can’t wait for the season to begin, and, as usual, there’s lots going on in the world of baseball, even in February.
Outfielder Johnny Damon, who helped the Boston Red Sox win the World Series in 2004 and then went to the New York Yankees, who won the World Series last year, became a free agent when the season ended.
It was announced Monday that Damon and the Detroit Tigers finalized an $8 million, one-year contract. I wonder if the Tigers have the clause about shaggy hair, or if Damon will go back to his caveman-like appearance that drew so many comments back in 2004.
Also, if anyone really cares, my least favorite player, Manny Ramirez, announced on his first day back in the Dodgers’ clubhouse he would not be returning next season. He said he doesn’t know if he’ll play or not, but if he does, it won’t be for the Dodgers. Yet again, it’s just Manny being Manny.
USA beats Canada
In a game reminiscent of the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” when the U.S. men’s hockey team beat Russia, the U.S. bested gold-medal favorite Canada 5-3 Sunday with a pair of goals from Brian Rafalski, and superb goaltending by Ryan Miller.
