Greg Mortenson, a humanitarian, international peacemaker, former mountaineer, founder of the non-profit Pennies for Peace and co-founder of the Central Asia Institute, will speak at 7 p.m. March 22 in the Columbus State University Lumpkin Center on main campus.
His book, "Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace ... One School at a Time," has been on the New York Times best seller list for 120 weeks, has sold more than 3 million copies and published in 34 countries. It's about his failed attempt to clim the K2 peak on the Pakistani border in 1993, and how he found a new passion -- to build schools. Last year, he had begun and supports 131 schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan. His newest book is "Stones Into Schools: Promoting Peace with Books, Not Bombs, in Afghanistan and Pakistan."
Admission is free, but those still holding tickets from the canceled speech in November, will get in first, starting at 6 p.m. Those without tickets can come in after 6:30 p.m. until all the seats are filled. More than 3,500 seats are available in the Lumpkin Center.
