For the past 10 years, Midland, Ga., resident Vivian Webb has been an active participant in the local American Cancer Society Relay for Life, an annual event that helps raise money to fight cancer.

Now, Webb’s 1-year-old beagle Bentley is helping battle the deadly disease as well.

Webb and husband Tim plan to bring Bentley to next week’s Relay for Dogs event, which raises money for the American Cancer Society and allows pet participation. Relay for Life, typically held in Columbus every May, does not allow canines.

  • RELAY FOR DOGS CALENDAR CONTEST

Pet owners are invited to have their dogs photographed Saturday and the day of the event for a calendar contest. On Saturday, T&C Pet Photography will be at PAWS Humane, 4900 Milgen Road, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. On either day, owners can purchase any of the photos and choose their favorite for the contest. Canines must be registered for Relay for Dogs to enter. The 12 owners who raise the most money for the Muscogee County Relay for Life on May 15 will win a spot for their dog in the 2011 Relay for Dogs Calendar. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society. E-mail relayfordogs@yahoo.com for more information.

This is Relay for Dogs’ second year in Columbus. Mandy Revell brainstormed the event after serving five years on the committee for the humans-only Relay for Life. Revell owns three dogs and one cat.

“I said, let’s give them their own relay,” she said.

The event is not a race, Revell stressed. Instead, dogs and their owners will be able to enjoy several of the planned activities and attractions: contests, an agility obstacle course, photo shoots, kiddie pools, treat giveaways and more.

Local supporters said it provides their pets with the opportunity to socialize with people and other dogs — and helps a cause that has affected many participants and people they know.

Phenix City couple Elliott and Monita Alcantara plan to bring their two dogs, an English mastiff and rottweiler named Caboose and Larry, respectively. Monita’s family has a history of breast cancer. Her first cousin, who was diagnosed two years ago, is a breast cancer survivor.

“It’s a different way to raise money for (the cause),” said Monita, 23.

All owners must register their dogs for the event. Last year, 324 dogs participated and Relay for Dogs raised nearly $10,000 for the American Cancer Society. Organizers are aiming for 400 dogs this year.

Webb said she is excited to bring Bentley so he can partake in the activities he enjoyed last year: swimming in the pool and collecting treats.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for dogs,” she said.
