I’ve dated my share of good-looking women, but I’ve never asked the question, “What is she doing with me?” I can understand how someone might ask themselves that question.
You might ask yourself the same question if your partner’s looks, status or wealth outclasses your own. There are only two things you can do in that case, deal with it and take it in stride, or obsess about it and see the obsession destroy the relationship.
What will you do?
This is the situation Kirk (Jay Baruchel) finds himself in She’s Out of My League.
Kirk is an average guy who wants to do some things in his life, but doesn’t seem to be making much progress.
He wants to be a pilot, but the closest he has gotten is working security for passengers at an airport. He wants a good woman in his life, but the best he’s managed is pining after an ex who sees him as disposable, but she refuses to go away and continues to hang out with his family. He’s got good friends, but like any gang of buddies, they don’t always give him the best advice.
That’s when Molly (Alice Eve) walks into his life. Molly is beautiful, smart, successful and pursuing “the dream.” For whatever reason, her eyes are drawn to Kirk and they fixate there.
After Kirk figures this out (he’s a bit slow on the uptake), he begins obsessing about why she’s with him and whether he’s good enough. Although his dysfunctional buddies trip him up with some bad advice, Kirk’s experiences force them to come to terms with some truths as well.
Even Molly is not immune to personal revelation in this journey.
Many of us have been in situations where our self-worth is shaky and we measure our own personal worth not just through our own merits, but by those around us.
Doing so forces us to examine our reactions and why they are happening.
From there, we can discover the truth and the worth of the relationships we are in.
She’s Out of My League addresses these types of issues.
The film is not particularly original, but it is clever, witty and well cast.
It’s a fun flick and a movie I recommend.
