Columbus, Phenix City stores host 'New Moon' midnight release parties tonight

Can't wait for normal Saturday business hours to get your hands on the DVD or Blu-Ray release of "The Twilight Saga: New Moon"? You're not alone.

Several local stores are gearing up for the midnight release of the highly-anticipated and successful second film in "The Twilight Saga," based on the book series by Stephanie Meyer.

All 24-hour Wal-Mart locations, including the stores in Phenix City and Columbus, will be taking part in a company-wide midnight release party, according to a press release sent out earlier this week.

From the press release, "Walmart is planning for another big weekend, preparing all 24-hour stores to entertain fans shortly after twilight, Friday evening. 'Twilight-themed' giveaways will go to the first 100 in line. Additionally some stores will have more giveaways to fans that can prove their 'Twilight trivia' knowledge in the run-up to the midnight release. Among the many offerings in its Twilight Saga Shops, Walmart will bring out at midnight the 'New Moon Ultimate Fan Edition' - the only DVD to be released with a 'sneak peek' of 'The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.'"

Things should start up around 11 tonight.

The Phenix City and Columbus Park Crossing Wal-Mart managers were unable to comment on the exact nature of the midnight release events, but said they would follow company protocol.

FYE, located inside Peachtree Mall, 3131 Manchester Expressway, is kicking things off tonight with a 6 p.m. showing of "New Moon" on the store's eight televisions.

The official release party begins at 10:30 p.m. Fans should enter through the mall's food court entrance.

Twi-hards can dress up as their favorite character for a costume contest, as well as participate in a trivia contest to win "The Twilight Saga" merchandise, such as tote bags, said assistant manager Sharonda Smith.

After the contests are over, "New Moon" will be played again until the DVD officially goes on sale at midnight.

Those who reserve a copy before midnight will be eligible to win a "New Moon" cardboard stand up.

An FYE-exclusive keepsake box is available that has space to hold the "Twilight" and "New Moon" DVDs, as well as the forthcoming movie editions of "Eclipse" and "Breaking Dawn."

Additionally, all CDs are priced at $9.99.
